Property Maintenance Enforcement
Our goal is to ensure clean, attractive and safe neighborhoods, maintain a peaceful and enjoyable community, and enhance the quality of life in Princeton. The rules and regulations enacted by the Princeton City Council are intended to assure that the use and maintenance of property is in compliance with the values and the standards of the community.
Common Items Requiring Correction
- Exterior Home Maintenance: The adopted International Property Maintenance code requires that all structures be kept in a good and safe condition. Some common violations include: peeling paint on exterior, rotting wood, broken siding, broken windows/screens, and handrail/guardrail maintenance.
- Debris Accumulation: The adopted International Property Maintenance code requires that yard areas be kept free from rubbish and debris. Garbage/rubbish shall be kept in containers outside of view. The City Land Development Code also prohibits outdoor storage in residential areas. Accumulations of building materials, yard machines, tools, tires, and other household items shall be stored inside an enclosed building or storage container.
- Address Numbers: Buildings shall have address numbers placed in a position to be pl ainly legible and visible from the street. The numbers shall be at least 4" in height and contrast with their background.
- Grass and Weeds: City code requires that lawns be maintained below 8" in height. Overgrown bushes and other landscaping shall also be maintained.
Permits and Prohibited Structures
Please know that all buildings, additions, structural alterations, and accessory structures require a permit for construction. Prohibited buildings include all forms of prefabricated metal carports and garages, shipping containers, and tarp structures.
