Main Street Sidewalk Policy
Currently, section 11-61 of the City of Princeton Municipal Code prohibits the obstruction of any sidewalk.
However, in consideration of the fact that the City wants to encourage pedestrian traffic and hel p create a vibrant Main Street, the City will allow the following encroachments on Main Street sidewalks:
- Limited outdoor seating/dining ( shall not occupy more than 50% of the total sidewalk width and must be located on building side of sidewalk )
- Sidewalk sales/displays,
- Temporary events
- Code compliant sandwich board signs
While allowing the aforementioned encroachments, the City also understands the need to not impede accessibility or create safety issues. Therefore , a minimum four (4) foot wide direct p edestrian sidewalk route shall be maintained in front of all businesses. The route shall be unencumbered by existing permanent obstructions such as street signs, utility pole s, benches, streetscaping, etc.
If it is found that a business is not complying with the Main Street Sidewalk Policy; the City may require that all obstructions be removed. In the case of outdoor dining, the City may also require that an approved divider be placed around the area to keep the required minimum path open.
