Your City Government

The City of Princeton utilizes the Council-Manager form of municipal government. The Council-Manager form is a system of local government that combines the strong political leadership of elected officials in the form of a council or other governing body, with the strong managerial experience of an appointed local government manager. This form of municipal government establishes a representative system where all power is concentrated in the elected council and where the council hires a professionally trained manager to oversee the delivery of public services.

Specifically, the City of Princeton elects a Mayor and four council members at large to form our City Council. The City Council appoints a City Manager to oversee and manage the day to day operations of the city. The City Manager prepares information for the City Council and its committees, communicates board policies to city departments and monitors the implementation of said policies, develops & presents an annual budget to the city council, and supervises all departmental operations, employees and programs.

The City of Princeton currently consists of nine different yet vital departments. Together, under the leadership of the City Manager, they perform the important and arduous tasks necessary to operate the community continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. These departments include: Planning and Zoning, Utility Billing, Police, Fire & EMS, Electric, Water, Waste Water, Streets & Sanitation (& Cemetery), and Fleet Maintenance.
